Bookitcon Chapter 2 Recap Panel 1: Surprises in Publishing

bookitcon chap 2

What is Bookitcon you ask? Its a charity event run by the seriously awesome Nori (of ReadWriteLove28) held in South Jersey to help promote literacy in children. The event raised money buy new books for two K-8 schools in Camden, NJ whose libraries need updating as well as create a library for the nonprofit group Grace in the Mud.

Well that’s the official reason – the unofficial reason is its an event for South Jersey that brings in a boatload of YA authors from across the genre divide so readers can meet, greet and be merry. Which I totally did and more importantly survived. Read my first recap to find out about the author shenanigan’s – this recap covers the first Panel of the day, so come back tomorrow for the second Panel!

Book Review: The Dead Boyfriend

dead boyfriend

Caitlyn has never had a real boyfriend before. When she starts seeing Blade, she throws herself into the relationship with fervor. She ignores her friends who warn her that Blade may be a phony and that she is taking the whole thing too seriously. Caitlyn is smitten. She doesn’t care if she loses her friends. All she wants is Blade. When Caitlyn sees Blade with another girl, she completely loses it. She snaps. Everything goes red. When she comes back to her senses, she realizes that Blade is dead-and she has killed him. But if Blade is dead, how is he staring at her across a crowded party?

ProsMy status updates are just…precious jewels of wit, Stine’s inadvertent use of the “yandere” trope

Cons – Less sense than most Shadyside teens, overuse of “Diary”, patently unbelievable lies

Spoiler – I’m going to ruin the “twist” to this book. Not that it matters.

Note – as of writing this review I could not find a different synopsis than the one I have here. I found this one on Teenreads.com…but the names were different (Caitlin vs Caitlyn, Colin vs Blade, which is funny considering what really happens in the book).

#SDCC2016 Highlight: BLACK PANTHER

Black Panther
credit: Black Panther movie twitter

I’m not even going to play – you want excited? Let me tell you about the excitement I feel over Marvel’s forthcoming Black Panther movie. I was originally excited when I heard they had cast Chaswick Boseman as T’Challa, my gorgeous Prince from a secret country. From what I saw of Boseman he looked like T’Challa; right build, right facial expressions, damn dapper in a suit. When I saw Civil War I could barely contain my glee as he was introduced. He sounded like my T’Challa. Eloquent, dry sense of humor and fiercely protective of his country.

I spent most of the rest of CW bouncing in my chair whenever he came on the screen. You guys I’m not joking when I say that the pre-teen inside of me–the girl who used his name to learn how to properly pronounce the letter ‘t’, ‘ch’ and ‘l’, who doggedly named him any time the kids around her talked about comics–was dancing with joy. If Barry Allen is my favorite guy in DC, T’Challa is my favorite guy in Marvel and I needed his first foray into the live action universe to be nailed.

And he was, oh my goodness he was.

Now at SDCC they unveiled a whole LOT of info about the movie (including the cast!). So expect me to go into overdrive mode when filming begins in January 2017 (which…hey where’s it being filmed…) so let’s break down what we know now ok? Continue reading “#SDCC2016 Highlight: BLACK PANTHER”

#SherlockedSunday: Portia Adams Adventures

sherlocked

Are you missing Sherlock Holmes as much as me? Does Benedict Cumberbatch’s sharp cheekbones and exasperated remarks about how dull we are all being fill your thoughts? Well my friends welcome to my problems.

While by no means the fiercest fan of Doyle’s lofty detective, I am still quite enamored of his exploits and the interpretations that have sprung up inspired by him. After all rumor has it that fanfiction for Sherlock is amongst the earliest examples of fans disagreeing with the creator and producing fan work that fits within their mindset better.

Until the new series premieres (“sometimes in 2017”) I thought every so often I’d examine one of the many adaptations that I have in my collection. If nothing else it will give me a reason to used “I am SHERlocked” right? Continue reading “#SherlockedSunday: Portia Adams Adventures”
