TASCHIMA’s Verdict:
4 Stars
Publish Date *New Release*: July 24th, 2018

After
Jess is alone. Her cabin has burned to the ground. She knows if she doesn’t act fast, the cold will kill her before she has time to worry about food. But she is still alive—for now.
Before
Jess hadn’t seen her survivalist, off-the-grid dad in over a decade. But after a car crash killed her mother and left her injured, she was forced to move to his cabin in the remote Canadian wilderness. Just as Jess was beginning to get to know him, a secret from his past paid them a visit, leaving her father dead and Jess stranded.
After
With only her father’s dog for company, Jess must forage and hunt for food, build shelter, and keep herself warm. Some days it feels like the wild is out to destroy her, but she’s stronger than she ever imagined.

Jess will survive. She has to. She knows who killed her father… and she wants revenge.

Holy shit this book was good.

It kind of reminded me of The Martian (I mean, duh, it is a survival book) though instead of space Jess is stuck in the middle of nowhere in Canada.

^How I feel most of the time.

In other news I have decided to seriously CALENDAR all upcoming releases I want to review/showcase here in the blog. Why must I do this?

It gives me structure.

…that way I can stop falling behind on reviewing, and maybe even talk about a book the week it is being released and not, lets say, 6 months later. I am terrible

It will allow me to feel prepared for the future.

…If I know the NEXTAWESOMEYATITLE is coming out next week Tuesday, then I can start reading the book NAO yes, the embarrassment that it might take me a whole week to finish a book… don’t make me go there this allows me to account for time well spent with my 10 month old baby boy who is just starting to walk/will not get off my lap (see below, my cutie pie).

James 07052018

(He also keeps stealing my kindle; I am both proud and annoyed)

It might help me actually remember which titles I SHOULD be reading because they are both awesome AND releasing soon, and not wander into my favorite series for the 100th re read (Jeanine Frost… I am looking at you. YOU TOO ILONA ANDREWS).

I think this might help me become a better blogger so I am giving it a shot. If there are any other bloggers out there reading this crazy woman’s plea, what do YOU do to stay on track?

Book Conventions and You

Hey hey lovely people what’s up? I’m fresh from maybe sort of kind of recovering from 2 days at Book Expo and 6 days at ALA Annual in NOLA.

Dear lord I’m exhausted thinking about that.

I know I’m blessed by the fact I can attend the shows – both are enormous financial strains if you’re not someone who can expense part of the trip. For NOLA I’m looking at $900 before taking into account food, souvenirs, shipping, public transportation and tourist stuff. And this is actually on the cheaper side of ALA trips for me.

So what does a Book Dragon do? You want to see the hot authors, read the hottest new books and be surrounded by your people to discuss bookish delights right?

There’s good news! Most regions have a Book Festival that you can attend, very often for free (or the price of whatever books you buy) so you can enjoy the bounty that is the Book World. Step behind the cut here and I’ll introduce you to some I’ve been to, some I’ve heard about and some that are well worth looking into.

Books Lexie Knew Nothing About: ALA Annual Edition

So who was ALA Annual in New Orleans this year? Raise a hand (or Daiqiuri glass!)

Tasch and I, along with our friends Oggie and Jenn, made a vacation of it and boy howdy was it fun. Good food, good walking, and good books – really what more do you need?

I went into ALA Annual as I usually do – with a plan in hand and backups as necessary. Oh I did my research and I poked at every title or author that sounded evenly remotely interesting to me, but as always there are more books in the world being published then even I can keep track of.

Here is a list of 10 titles I was thrilled to learn more about and pick up a copy of!

My #1 Reason to Look Forward to the New Year: Slayer By Kiersten White!! #BuffyTheVampireSlayer

I am a huge HUUUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I was (teenage) raised on Buffy, watched every single season (own them still), plus Angel (even though I am TEAM SPIKE), and am currently reading the ongoing comic book series (up next is season 12! First issue to be release June 20th according to my research–Wut wut!).

Anywhooo, I just want to make sure that everybody understand that when I say that I am excited about Slayer by Kiersten White you know I am LEGIT excited.

When I first heard the news Kiersten White was writing Buffy I was a bit iffy. Will she do it justice, is it canon, will it intersect in any way with the comic?

I do not quite know yet all the answers to these questions, BUT I did get a chance to read the Entertainment Weekly excerpt (which I almost never do because excerpts are such a tease) and it has made me feel 100% better about this whole endeavor as a die hard Buffy fan.

From the excerpt I got:

  • It is set around season 9 of Buffy. Because that is when we deal with the “end of magic” and the main character kept referring to Buffy’s fuck up, and “how are watcher’s supposed to deal without magic?”
  • Kiersten White likes to write about twins.
  • The main character is totally adorable, and I already love her a little.
  • Wanda WYNDHAM-PRICE… am I to believe this is WESLEY’s Mother?! We shall see…
  • I need the book right NAO. Only an apocalypse can keep me away!

DC is Hoarding all the Big Name YA Authors…

And I’m loving it!

If you can’t beat Marvel at their movie game (I mean, they just can’t) then let’s try to go another route! With popular authors like Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries), Kami Garcia (Beautiful Creatures), Danielle Paige (Dorothy Must Die), Lauren Myracle (Internet Girls), Melissa De La Cruz (Blue Bloods), Mariko Tamaki (She Hulk! Lumberjanes)…

Well, DC is seriously going for the kill, and trying to entice a new generation of readers into the fold.

Black Canary by Meg Cabot

*To be clear, these will be illustrated novels, and not book books.
**Also, I love ALL THE COVERS.

I am so excited, I can’t even. Although I am not a fan of Harley Quinn (she seems like such a bad role model for little girls) I am hoping that Mariko Tamaki will take this character in a different direction. Maybe it won’t be true to the character’s roots, but if Harley Quinn is being promoted for little girls she might as well get a character makeover.

I am MOST excited about Black Canary and Raven ❤ ❤ ❤

Melissa de La Cruz will be writing Batman: Gotham High (no cover as of yet), and Laurie Halse Anderson will be writing Wonder Woman:Tempest Tossed (no cover yet).

I need to Pre-order ASAP.

Who Wants a Sneak Peak of WILDCARD (Sequel to WARCROSS) by Marie Lu?

Click on the Image for the PREVIEW

My attention shifts to a police barricade at the end of the street. They’re directing us to detour down a different block. Ambulance lights flash against the walls, illuminating a covered gurney being lifted into the vehicle. I only need to catch a glimpse of officers pointing up at the roof of a nearby building before I figure out what occurred here. Another criminal must have jumped to their death. Suicides like this have been peppering the news.

And I helped make all of this happen.

Marie Lu, Penguin’s powerhouse, is coming out with the sequel to Warcross on September 18th, 2018.

I personally gave Warcross two out of five stars, I was unimpressed, but I want to give Wildcard a chance to blow it out of the park. Make me regret ever saying bad things about Warcross, make me believe again…
